But while he was living in Jerusalem, David married more wives and fathered more sons and daughters. | 3David took more wives in Jerusalem, and he became the father of more sons and daughters. |

When the Philistines learned that David had been anointed king over all of Israel, all of the Philistines invaded to look for David. David heard about it and went out to fight them. | 8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of David; when David heard of this, he went out to face them. |
Meanwhile, the Philistines had invaded and raided the Rephaim Valley. | 9Now the Philistines had come and raided in the Valley of Rephaim, |
So David asked God, "Am I to go out against the Philistines? Will you give me victory over them?" "Go out," the LORD replied to him, "and I'll put them right into your hand." | 10so David inquired of God, "Should I go to war against the Philistines? Will You hand them over to me?" The LORD replied, "Go, and I will hand them over to you." |
So David went out to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there. David observed, "Like an overwhelming flood, God has overwhelmed my enemies, using me to do it." That's why that place is called Baal-perazim. | 11So the Israelites went up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated the Philistines there. Then David said, "Like a bursting flood, God has used me to burst out against my enemies." Therefore, they named that place the Lord Bursts Out. |
The Philistines abandoned their gods there, so David ordered that their idols be incinerated. | 12The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire. |
Later the Philistines invaded the Rephaim Valley again. | 13Once again the Philistines raided in the valley. |
When David asked God about it, God told him, "Don't directly attack them. Instead, go around them and come up against them opposite those balsam trees. | 14So David again inquired of God, and God answered him, "Do not pursue them directly. Circle around them and attack them opposite the balsam trees. |
When you hear the sound of marching coming from the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, because God will have gone out ahead of you to destroy the Philistine army." | 15When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then march out to battle, for God will have marched out ahead of you to attack the camp of the Philistines." |
So David did just as God had ordered, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. | 16So David did exactly as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. |
Then David's reputation spread through all of the neighboring countries, and the LORD caused all nations to be afraid of David. | 17Then David's fame spread throughout the lands, and the LORD caused all the nations to be terrified of him. |
