Holman Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
LORD, God of vengeance-- God of vengeance, appear. | 1O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth! |
Rise up, Judge of the earth; repay the proud what they deserve. | 2Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. |
LORD, how long will the wicked-- how long will the wicked gloat? | 3How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? |
They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. | 4How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? |
LORD, they crush Your people; they afflict Your heritage. | 5They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own. |
They kill the widow and the foreigner and murder the fatherless. | 6They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans. |
They say, "The LORD doesn't see it. The God of Jacob doesn't pay attention." | 7“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.” |
Pay attention, you stupid people! Fools, when will you be wise? | 8Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? |
Can the One who shaped the ear not hear, the One who formed the eye not see? | 9Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes? |
The One who instructs nations, the One who teaches man knowledge-- does He not discipline? | 10He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing? |
The LORD knows man's thoughts; they are meaningless. | 11The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! |
LORD, happy is the man You discipline and teach from Your law | 12Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. |
to give him relief from troubled times until a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. |
The LORD will not forsake His people or abandon His heritage, | 14The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. |
for justice will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it. |
Who stands up for me against the wicked? Who takes a stand for me against evildoers? | 16Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
If the LORD had not been my helper, I would soon rest in the silence of death. | 17Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. |
If I say, "My foot is slipping," Your faithful love will support me, LORD. | 18I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. |
When I am filled with cares, Your comfort brings me joy. | 19When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. |
Can a corrupt throne-- one that creates trouble by law-- become Your ally? | 20Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? |
They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD is my refuge; my God is the rock of my protection. | 22But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. |
He will pay them back for their sins and destroy them for their evil. The LORD our God will destroy them. | 23God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
