Holman Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
One day the sons of God came again to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before the LORD. | 1One day the members of the heavenly court came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. |
The LORD asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" "From roaming through the earth," Satan answered Him, "and walking around on it." | 2“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” |
Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him, to destroy him without just cause." | 3Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.” |
"Skin for skin!" Satan answered the LORD. "A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life. | 4Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. |
But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face." | 5But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!” |
"Very well," the LORD told Satan, "he is in your power; only spare his life." | 6“All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.” |
So Satan left the LORD's presence and infected Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. | 7So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot. |
Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes. | 8Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes. |
His wife said to him, "Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!" | 9His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” |
"You speak as a foolish woman speaks," he told her. "Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?" Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said. | 10But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong. Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish |
Now when Job's three friends--Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite--heard about all this adversity that had happened to him, each of them came from his home. They met together to go and sympathize with him and comfort him. | 11When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. |
When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognize him. They wept aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head. | 12When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. |
Then they sat on the ground with him seven days and nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw that his suffering was very intense. | 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words. |
