Job continued his discourse, saying: | 1And Job took up his discourse again: |
As God lives, who has deprived me of justice, and the Almighty who has made me bitter, | 2"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter-- |
as long as my breath is still in me and the breath from God remains in my nostrils, | 3for while my spirit is still in me, and the breath from God is in my nostrils, |
my lips will not speak unjustly, and my tongue will not utter deceit. | 4my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper no deceit. |
I will never affirm that you are right. I will maintain my integrity until I die. | 5I will never declare that you three are in the right; until I die, I will not set aside my integrity! |
I will cling to my righteousness and never let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live! | 6I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience will not reproach me for as long as I live. |
May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. | 7"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unrighteous. |
For what hope does the godless man have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? | 8For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? |
Will God hear his cry when distress comes on him? | 9Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him? |
Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times? |
I will teach you about God's power. I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned. | 11I will teach you about the power of God; What is on the Almighty's mind I will not conceal. |
All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk? | 12If you yourselves have all seen this, Why in the world do you continue this meaningless talk? |
This is a wicked man's lot from God, the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty. | 13This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty. |
Even if his children increase, they are destined for the sword; his descendants will never have enough food. | 14If his children increase--it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat. |
Those who survive him will be buried by the plague, yet their widows will not weep for them. | 15Those who survive him are buried by the plague, and their widows do not mourn for them. |
Though he piles up silver like dust and heaps up a wardrobe like clay-- | 16If he piles up silver like dust and stores up clothing like mounds of clay, |
he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide up his silver. | 17what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver. |
The house he built is like a moth's cocoon or a booth set up by a watchman. | 18The house he builds is as fragile as a moth's cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made. |
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, it is gone. | 19He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone. |
Terrors overtake him like a flood; a storm wind sweeps him away at night. | 20Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off. |
An east wind picks him up, and he is gone; it carries him away from his place. | 21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. |
It blasts at him without mercy, while he flees desperately from its grasp. | 22It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power. |
It claps its hands at him and scorns him from its place. | 23It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place. |
