| 1Open your gates, Lebanon, and fire will consume your cedars. | 1Open your doors, Lebanon, and fire will consume your cedars. |
| 2Wail, cypress, for the cedar has fallen; the glorious trees are destroyed! Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the stately forest has fallen! | 2Wail, cypress tree, for the cedar has fallen while the stately trees are destroyed. Wail, oak trees of Bashan, for the old growth forest has been cut down. |
| 3Listen to the wail of the shepherds, for their glory is destroyed. Listen to the roar of young lions, for the thickets of the Jordan are destroyed. | 3Hear the wailing of the shepherds, for the magnificence of the forest is ruined! Hear the roar of the lions, for the Jordan's arrogance is ruined! |
| 4Yahweh my God says this: "Shepherd the flock intended for slaughter. | 4This is what the LORD my God says: "Shepherd the flock marked for slaughter. |
| 5Those who buy them slaughter them but are not punished. Those who sell them say: Praise the LORD because I have become rich! Even their own shepherds have no compassion for them. | 5Their buyers slaughter them without being punished, continuing to sell them as they say, 'Bless the LORD!' and, 'I'm rich!' Meanwhile, their shepherds show them no compassion. |
| 6Indeed, I will no longer have compassion on the inhabitants of the land"--this is the LORD's declaration. "Instead, I will turn everyone over to his neighbor and his king. They will devastate the land, and I will not deliver it from them." | 6Therefore I will no longer show compassion upon those who live in the land," declares the LORD. "Look! I will deliver every single person into the control of his neighbor and into the control of the king. Even though they assault the land, I will not deliver it from their control." |
| 7So I shepherded the flock intended for slaughter, the afflicted of the flock. I took two staffs, calling one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. | 7So I became shepherd of the flock marked for slaughter, paying attention to the oppressed of the flock. I took two staffs—naming one "Pleasant" and the other one "Union"—and then I pastured the flock. |
| 8In one month I got rid of three shepherds. I became impatient with them, and they also detested me. | 8In a single month I got rid of three shepherds because I grew tired of them, and they despised me. |
| 9Then I said, "I will no longer shepherd you. Let what is dying die, and let what is going astray go astray; let the rest devour each other's flesh." | 9So I said, "I will no longer be your shepherd. Let those who are about to die perish, and let what is about to be destroyed be destroyed. As for the survivors, let them devour each other." |
| 10Next I took my staff called Favor and cut it in two, annulling the covenant I had made with all the peoples. | 10Then I took the staff that I had named "Pleasant" and broke it, showing I was breaking my covenant that I had made with all of the people. |
| 11It was annulled on that day, and so the afflicted of the flock who were watching me knew that it was the word of the LORD. | 11It was broken at that time so the oppressed of the flock who were observing me would know that it had been a message from the LORD. |
| 12Then I said to them, "If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them." So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver." | 12I told them, "If it's alright with you, pay me what I've earned. But if it isn't, don't." So they paid out what I had earned—30 pieces of silver. |
| 13Throw it to the potter," the LORD said to me--this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the LORD, to the potter. | 13Then the LORD told me, "Throw the money into the treasury —that magnificent value they placed on me!" So I took the 30 shekels of silver and threw them into the treasury of the Temple of the LORD. |
| 14Then I cut in two my second staff, Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. | 14Then I broke my second staff—the one I had named "Union"—breaking the union between the house of Judah and the house of Israel. |
| 15The LORD also said to me: "Take the equipment of a foolish shepherd. | 15The LORD told me, "Pick up the tools of a worthless shepherd again, |
| 16I am about to raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are going astray, and he will not seek the lost or heal the broken. He will not sustain the healthy, but he will devour the flesh of the fat sheep and tear off their hooves. | 16for I am now raising up a shepherd in the land who will neither search for the lost, nor care for the young, nor fix the broken, nor sustain the healthy. Instead, he will devour the meat of the best of the sheep, tearing off their hoofs." |
| 17Woe to the worthless shepherd who deserts the flock! May a sword strike his arm and his right eye! May his arm wither away and his right eye go completely blind!" | 17"Woe to the worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye.
