| 1Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1O God, listen to my complaint. Protect my life from my enemies’ threats. |
| 2Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers, | 2Hide me from the plots of this evil mob, from this gang of wrongdoers. |
| 3who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, | 3They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows. |
| 4shooting from ambush at the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear. | 4They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly. |
| 5They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see them?” | 5They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret. “Who will ever notice?” they ask. |
| 6They search out injustice, saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.” For the inward mind and heart of a man are deep. | 6As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning. |
| 7But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. | 7But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down. |
| 8They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. | 8Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. |
| 9Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what he has done. | 9Then everyone will be afraid; they will proclaim the mighty acts of God and realize all the amazing things he does. |
| 10Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult! | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and find shelter in him. And those who do what is right will praise him. |
