English Standard Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, | 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, |
saying, “I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. | 2and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. |
For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. | 3"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. |
Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ | 4"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' |
The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head | 5"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. |
at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. | 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. |
When my life was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. | 7"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. |
Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. | 8"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, |
But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the LORD!” | 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." |
And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. |
