English Standard Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. | 1Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. |
I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, | 2I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, |
for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? | 3because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? |
For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? | 4For whenever someone says, "I'm with Paul," and another, "I'm with Apollos," are you not unspiritual people? |
What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. | 5What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. |
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. | 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. |
So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. | 7So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. |
He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. | 8Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. |
For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. | 9For we are God's coworkers. You are God's field, God's building. |
According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. | 10According to God's grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. |
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. | 11For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. |
Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— | 12If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, |
each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. | 13each one's work will become obvious, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one's work. |
If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. | 14If anyone's work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. |
If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. | 15If anyone's work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire. |
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? | 16Don't you yourselves know that you are God's sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you? |
If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. | 17If anyone destroys God's sanctuary, God will destroy him; for God's sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are. |
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. | 18No one should deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he can become wise. |
For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” | 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness; |
and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” | 20and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are meaningless. |
So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, | 21So no one should boast in human leaders, for everything is yours-- |
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, | 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come--everything is yours, |
and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. | 23and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. |
