A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk. According to Shigionoth. | 1This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet: |
LORD, I have heard the report about you; LORD, I stand in awe of your deeds. Revive your work in these years; make it known in these years. In your wrath remember mercy! | 2LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! |
God comes from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covers the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise. | 3God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth. |
His brilliance is like light; rays are flashing from his hand. This is where his power is hidden. | 4He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power. |
Plague goes before him, and pestilence follows in his steps. | 5Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him. |
He stands and shakes the earth; he looks and startles the nations. The age-old mountains break apart; the ancient hills sink down. His pathways are ancient. | 6He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. |
I see the tents of Cushan in distress; the tent curtains of the land of Midian tremble. | 7I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking. |
Are you angry at the rivers, LORD? Is your wrath against the rivers? Or is your rage against the sea when you ride on your horses, your victorious chariot? | 8Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots? |
You took the sheath from your bow; the arrows are ready to be used with an oath. Selah You split the earth with rivers. | 9Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface. |
The mountains see you and shudder; a downpour of water sweeps by. The deep roars with its voice and lifts its waves high. | 10When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. |
Sun and moon stand still in their lofty residence, at the flash of your flying arrows, at the brightness of your shining spear. | 11The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. |
You march across the earth with indignation; you trample down the nations in wrath. | 12You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. |
You come out to save your people, to save your anointed. You crush the leader of the house of the wicked and strip him from foot to neck. Selah | 13You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah. |
You pierce his head with his own spears; his warriors storm out to scatter us, gloating as if ready to secretly devour the weak. | 14You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition. |
You tread the sea with your horses, stirring up the vast water. | 15But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. |
I heard, and I trembled within; my lips quivered at the sound. Rottenness entered my bones; I trembled where I stood. Now I must quietly wait for the day of distress to come against the people invading us. | 16I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us. |
Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the flocks disappear from the pen and there are no herds in the stalls, | 17When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, |
yet I will celebrate in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! | 18I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! |
The LORD my Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like those of a deer and enables me to walk on mountain heights! For the choir director: on stringed instruments. | 19The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) |
