David consulted with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands. | 1Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, even with every leader. |
Then he said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if this is from the LORD our God, let us spread out and send the message to the rest of our relatives in all the districts of Israel, including the priests and Levites in their cities with pasturelands, that they should gather together with us. | 2David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is from the LORD our God, let us send everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they may meet with us; |
Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of him in Saul's days." | 3and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul." |
Since the proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to do it. | 4Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. |
So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. | 5So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. |
David and all Israel went to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah) to take from there the ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. | 6David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the LORD who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called. |
At Abinadab's house they set the ark of God on a new cart. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart. | 7They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. |
David and all Israel were dancing with all their might before God with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. | 8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, even with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals and with trumpets. |
When they came to Chidon's threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to hold the ark because the oxen had stumbled. | 9When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly upset it. |
Then the LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had reached out to the ark. So he died there in the presence of God. | 10The anger of the LORD burned against Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. |
David was angry because of the LORD's outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah, as it is still named today. | 11Then David became angry because of the LORD'S outburst against Uzza; and he called that place Perez-uzza to this day. |
David feared God that day and said, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?" | 12David was afraid of God that day, saying, "How can I bring the ark of God home to me?" |
So David did not bring the ark of God home to the city of David; instead, he diverted it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. | 13So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. |
The ark of God remained with Obed-edom's family in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his family and all that he had. | 14Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months; and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom with all that he had. |
