Job continued his discourse, saying: | 1Job continued with his discussion and said: |
As God lives, who has deprived me of justice, and the Almighty who has made me bitter, | 2"The living God has withheld justice from me; the Almighty has made my life bitter. |
as long as my breath is still in me and the breath from God remains in my nostrils, | 3As long as I can breathe; as long as God's breath is in my nostrils, |
my lips will not speak unjustly, and my tongue will not utter deceit. | 4I won't speak lies nor will I utter deceit. |
I will never affirm that you are right. I will maintain my integrity until I die. | 5Far be it from me to admit that you're right! I intend to maintain my integrity even if it kills me! |
I will cling to my righteousness and never let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live! | 6I'll retain my righteousness and not compromise it; my conscience won't rebuke me at any time. |
May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. | 7"May my enemy be like the wicked; my adversary like the unjust. |
For what hope does the godless person have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? | 8For where is the hope of the godless when he is eliminated; when God takes away his life? |
Will God hear his cry when distress comes on him? | 9Will God hear his cry when distress overtakes him? |
Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times?" |
I will teach you about God's power. I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned. | 11"I'll teach you about the power of God, that which is with the Almighty I won't conceal. |
All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk? | 12Look! All of you have been watching, so why have you become so completely worthless? |
This is a wicked man's lot from God, the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty. | 13"This is what a wicked person inherits from God, and what the ruthless will receive from the Almighty: |
Even if his children increase, they are destined for the sword; his descendants will never have enough food. | 14If he has many children, their destiny is to die by the sword, and his descendants won't have enough food. |
Those who survive him will be buried by the plague, yet their widows will not weep for them. | 15Those who do survive him disease will bury, and his widow won't even weep. |
Though he piles up silver like dust and heaps up fine clothing like clay-- | 16"Though he hoards silver like dust, and stores away garments like clay, |
he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide up his silver. | 17whatever he stores up, the righteous will wear, and the innocent will inherit that silver! |
The house he built is like a moth's cocoon or a shelter set up by a watchman. | 18"He has built his house like a moth's cocoon, like a temporary sunshade that a watchman makes. |
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, it is gone. | 19He will go to bed wealthy, but won't be doing that anymore! When he opens his eyes, it will be gone! |
Terrors overtake him like a flood; a storm wind sweeps him away at night. | 20Terror will overtake him like a flood, at night, a tornado will sweep him away. |
An east wind picks him up, and he is gone; it carries him away from his place. | 21He'll be swept up by a storm wind and carried away; he'll be whirled away from his place. |
It blasts at him without mercy, while he flees desperately from its force. | 22It will toss him around without pity. He'll try to break free from its grip, |
It claps its hands at him and scoffs at him from its place. | 23but it will clap its hands over him, hissing at him as it lunges toward him." |
