Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: | 1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, |
“How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a blustering wind. | 2"How long will you say these things, And the words of your mouth be a mighty wind? |
Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right? | 3"Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert what is right? |
When your children sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion. | 4"If your sons sinned against Him, Then He delivered them into the power of their transgression. |
But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy, | 5"If you would seek God And implore the compassion of the Almighty, |
if you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate. | 6If you are pure and upright, Surely now He would rouse Himself for you And restore your righteous estate. |
Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days will flourish. | 7"Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will increase greatly. |
Please inquire of past generations and consider the discoveries of their fathers. | 8"Please inquire of past generations, And consider the things searched out by their fathers. |
For we were born yesterday and know nothing; our days on earth are but a shadow. | 9"For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are as a shadow. |
Will they not teach you and tell you, and speak from their understanding? | 10"Will they not teach you and tell you, And bring forth words from their minds? |
Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh? Do reeds flourish without water? | 11"Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the rushes grow without water? |

Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish. | 13"So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the godless will perish, |
His confidence is fragile; his security is in a spider’s web. | 14Whose confidence is fragile, And whose trust a spider's web. |
He leans on his web, but it gives way; he holds fast, but it does not endure. | 15"He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds fast to it, but it does not endure. |
He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden. | 16"He thrives before the sun, And his shoots spread out over his garden. |
His roots wrap around the rock heap; he looks for a home among the stones. | 17"His roots wrap around a rock pile, He grasps a house of stones. |
If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’ | 18"If he is removed from his place, Then it will deny him, saying, 'I never saw you.' |
Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust. | 19"Behold, this is the joy of His way; And out of the dust others will spring. |
Behold, God does not reject the blameless, nor will He strengthen the hand of evildoers. | 20"Lo, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He support the evildoers. |
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with a shout of joy. | 21"He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with shouting. |
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.” | 22"Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tent of the wicked will be no longer." |
