EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
10:23-31 Christ took this occasion to speak to his disciples about the difficulty of the salvation of those who have abundance of this world. Those who thus eagerly seek the wealth of the world, will never rightly prize Christ and his grace. Also, as to the greatness of the salvation of those who have but little of this world, and leave it for Christ. The greatest trial of a good man's constancy is, when love to Jesus calls him to give up love to friends and relatives. Even when gainers by Christ, let them still expect to suffer for him, till they reach heaven. Let us learn contentment in a low state, and to watch against the love of riches in a high one. Let us pray to be enabled to part with all, if required, in Christ's service, and to use all we are allowed to keep in his service.Out of measure - Very much, or exceedingly. The Greek means no more than this.Mr 10:17-31. The Rich Young Ruler. ( = Mt 19:16-30; Lu 18:18-30).

See on [1473]Lu 18:18-30.

See Poole on "Mark 10:23"

And they were astonished out of measure,.... They were still more amazed, their surprise increased exceedingly upon our Lord's using the above comparison; which, in their apprehension, showed, that it was utterly impossible for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God; and they expressed their astonishment,

saying, among themselves, who then can be saved? in the Messiah's kingdom, if rich men are not? See Gill on Matthew 19:25. The Persic version renders it, "how can this man be saved?" as if the words had a particular respect to the young man, that had great possessions, and was gone away sorrowful.

And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
Mark 10:26. The disciples, amazed, ask: καὶ τίς δύναται σωθῆναι; τίς ἄρα, etc., in Mt. The καὶ resumes what has been said, and draws from it an inference meant to call its truth in question (Holtz., H. C.) = who, in that case, can be saved?

Mark 10:26. Καὶ, and [i.e. “who then?”]) This particle here expresses astonishment.

Verse 26. - And they were astonished exceedingly (περισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο). saying among themselves - according to the best reading the words are, saying unto him (πρὸς αὐτόν) - Then who can be saved? Mark 10:26
