Meekness: Ministers should Follow After

Meekness is a virtue that is highly esteemed in the Christian faith, often associated with humility, gentleness, and a submissive spirit to God's will. It is a quality that ministers, as leaders and shepherds of the flock, are called to embody and pursue diligently.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible provides numerous exhortations and examples that highlight the importance of meekness, especially for those in positions of spiritual leadership. In 1 Timothy 6:11, the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy, a young minister, to "pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness" . The term "gentleness" here is synonymous with meekness, indicating that it is a quality to be actively sought after.

In the Beatitudes, Jesus Himself elevates meekness as a blessed state, saying, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5). This promise underscores the eternal value and reward associated with meekness, encouraging ministers to cultivate this trait as part of their spiritual character.

Characteristics of Meekness

Meekness is not to be confused with weakness or passivity. Rather, it is strength under control, a deliberate choice to submit one's own power and rights to the authority of God. It involves a gentle and patient disposition, even in the face of provocation or adversity. As James 1:21 advises, "Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls" . This humility and receptiveness to God's Word are central to the meek spirit.

Examples of Meekness in Ministry

The Bible provides several examples of leaders who exemplified meekness. Moses is described as "a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth" (Numbers 12:3). Despite his significant leadership role, Moses consistently demonstrated a reliance on God and a willingness to intercede for the people, even when they rebelled against him.

The Apostle Paul also exemplified meekness in his ministry. In 2 Corinthians 10:1, he appeals to the Corinthians "by the meekness and gentleness of Christ" , showing that his approach to leadership was modeled after the character of Christ Himself. Paul’s letters often reflect a balance of authority and gentleness, guiding the early church with a spirit of humility and love.

The Role of Meekness in Ministry

For ministers, meekness is essential in fostering a spirit of unity and peace within the church. It enables leaders to correct and instruct with patience and love, as Paul advises in 2 Timothy 2:24-25: "And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing. He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth" .

Moreover, meekness allows ministers to be effective witnesses of the Gospel, as it reflects the character of Christ to the world. In 1 Peter 3:15, believers are encouraged to "sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you, but respond with gentleness and respect" . This gentle approach is crucial in engaging others with the truth of the Gospel.

Conclusion

While a conclusion was not requested, it is evident that meekness is a vital attribute for ministers, shaping their interactions with others and their relationship with God. By following after meekness, ministers align themselves with the example of Christ and fulfill their calling to lead with humility and grace.
