Lying: Saints: Hate

Lying, defined as the act of making a false statement with the intention to deceive, is consistently condemned throughout the Scriptures. The Bible presents truth as a fundamental attribute of God's character, and as such, lying is seen as contrary to the nature of God and His people. Saints, those set apart for God's purposes, are called to hate lying as it stands in opposition to the truth they are to embody and uphold.

The book of Proverbs frequently addresses the issue of lying, emphasizing the disdain that the righteous should have for falsehood. Proverbs 13:5 states, "The righteous hate falsehood, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace." This verse highlights the natural aversion that the righteous, or saints, have towards lying, contrasting it with the behavior of the wicked who are associated with shame and disgrace due to their deceitful ways.

In the New Testament, the call for saints to reject lying is reiterated. Ephesians 4:25 instructs believers, "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another." This directive underscores the importance of truthfulness within the Christian community, as lying not only harms relationships but also disrupts the unity and integrity of the body of Christ.

The apostle Paul further emphasizes the transformation expected of believers in Colossians 3:9-10 : "Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator." Here, lying is associated with the "old self," a way of life that believers are to abandon as they are renewed in the image of God, who is truth.

The Psalms also reflect the righteous person's hatred for lying. Psalm 119:163 declares, "I hate and abhor falsehood, but Your law I love." This verse captures the deep-seated aversion to lying that characterizes the saints, who instead delight in God's law, which is truth.

The book of Revelation provides a sobering reminder of the ultimate fate of liars. Revelation 21:8 warns, "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." This passage underscores the severity with which God views lying, placing it among other grave sins that lead to eternal separation from Him.

In summary, the biblical narrative consistently portrays lying as an abomination to God and something that saints are to hate and avoid. The call to truthfulness is a reflection of the character of God, and as His representatives, saints are to embody this truth in their lives, rejecting all forms of deceit.
