Trogyllium is a location mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically in the Book of Acts. It is a promontory on the western coast of Asia Minor, near the island of Samos. This geographical reference is part of the Apostle Paul's third missionary journey as he traveled towards Jerusalem.

Biblical Reference:

The mention of Trogyllium is found in Acts 20:15. The Berean Standard Bible states: "Sailing on from there, we arrived the next day opposite Chios. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and on the next day we came to Miletus." Some manuscripts include a reference to Trogyllium in this passage, indicating that Paul and his companions anchored there briefly before proceeding to Miletus.

Historical and Geographical Context:

Trogyllium is located on the mainland opposite the island of Samos, near the modern-day town of Kuşadası in Turkey. In ancient times, it was a significant point for maritime navigation due to its proximity to the narrow strait between the mainland and Samos. The promontory provided a natural shelter for ships, making it a convenient stop for travelers and merchants navigating the Aegean Sea.

Significance in Paul's Journey:

The brief mention of Trogyllium in the context of Paul's journey underscores the Apostle's determined progress towards Jerusalem. This journey was marked by a series of rapid movements from one coastal location to another, reflecting Paul's urgency to reach Jerusalem in time for Pentecost (Acts 20:16). The stop at Trogyllium, though not elaborated upon in the biblical text, is part of the meticulous itinerary that Luke, the author of Acts, records to highlight the Apostle's missionary zeal and commitment.

Cultural and Theological Insights:

While Trogyllium itself does not hold significant theological implications, its mention contributes to the historical reliability of the Acts narrative. The detailed travelogue in Acts 20, including the stop at Trogyllium, provides insight into the early Christian mission's geographical scope and the challenges faced by Paul and his companions. The journey reflects the spread of the Gospel across diverse regions and cultures, emphasizing the universal nature of the Christian message.

In summary, Trogyllium serves as a geographical marker in the Apostle Paul's missionary endeavors, illustrating the practical aspects of travel in the ancient world and the relentless pursuit of spreading the Gospel message.

TROGYLLIUM

tro-jil'-i-um, tro-gil'-i-um (Trogullion): According to Acts 20:15 the King James Version, the American Revised Version margin, the ship in which Paul sailed to Caesatea on his return from his 3rd missionary journey tarried at Trogyllium. Several of the early manuscripts omit the words, "tarried at Trogyllium" (Westcott and Hort omit as "Western" interpolation); yet, whether the words belonged to the text or not, Paul evidently passed the promontory, and probably stopped there. From the coast near Miletus the promontory projects into the sea toward the island of Samos; the strait separating the mainland from the island is scarcely a mile wide. It was in this strait which is now called Kutchuk Boghaz by the Turks that the battle of Mycale was fought in 479 B.C. The promontory now bears the name of Santa Maria, and the place of anchorage is called Saint Paul's port.
