Surfeiting, in biblical terms, refers to excessive indulgence, particularly in eating and drinking, leading to overindulgence and intemperance. This concept is often associated with a lack of self-control and is viewed as contrary to the virtues of moderation and temperance that are encouraged throughout Scripture.

The term "surfeiting" is notably mentioned in the New Testament. In Luke 21:34 , Jesus warns His disciples, "But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the worries of life—and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a trap." Here, "dissipation" is often understood to include surfeiting, highlighting the spiritual danger of being consumed by worldly pleasures and distractions.

Surfeiting is seen as a manifestation of the fleshly desires that believers are urged to resist. The Apostle Paul, in his epistles, frequently contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. In Galatians 5:19-21 , he lists "drunkenness" and "orgies" among the acts of the flesh, which are akin to surfeiting, warning that "those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

The Bible consistently calls for a life of self-discipline and moderation. Proverbs 23:20-21 advises, "Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat. For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe them in rags." This passage underscores the practical and spiritual consequences of surfeiting, linking it to poverty and a lack of vigilance.

In the broader biblical narrative, surfeiting is often associated with a disregard for spiritual matters. The account of Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal (Genesis 25:29-34), serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of prioritizing immediate physical gratification over long-term spiritual blessings.

The early Christian community was also mindful of the dangers of surfeiting. The Didache, an early Christian text, advises believers to "be not a glutton, nor a winebibber, nor a lover of money, nor vainglorious; for out of all these things thefts are engendered." This reflects the understanding that surfeiting can lead to other sins and moral failings.

In summary, surfeiting is viewed in the Bible as a vice that leads to spiritual and moral decay. It is a behavior that believers are called to avoid, in favor of a life marked by self-control, vigilance, and a focus on spiritual rather than earthly pleasures.
