Spiritual Discernment

Spiritual discernment is the ability to perceive and understand spiritual truths and realities, distinguishing between what is of God and what is not. It is a gift and skill that believers are encouraged to develop through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the study of Scripture. The Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of discernment in the life of a believer, stating, "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:14).

Discernment is crucial for navigating the complexities of life and faith, enabling believers to make wise decisions that align with God's will. The Apostle John warns, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). This testing requires a deep understanding of God's Word and a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The development of spiritual discernment is closely tied to the renewal of the mind, as Paul exhorts in Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God" . This transformation involves a continual process of aligning one's thoughts and actions with the truths of Scripture.

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth is the process of becoming more like Christ in character and conduct. It is a lifelong journey that involves increasing in knowledge, faith, and love. The Apostle Peter encourages believers to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). This growth is facilitated by the Holy Spirit, who works within believers to produce the fruit of the Spirit, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23.

The foundation of spiritual growth is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, nurtured through prayer, worship, and the study of Scripture. Jesus Himself taught the importance of abiding in Him, saying, "I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). This abiding relationship is essential for spiritual vitality and growth.

Community also plays a vital role in spiritual growth. Believers are called to encourage and edify one another, as seen in Hebrews 10:24-25: "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching" . The church provides a context for accountability, teaching, and mutual support, all of which contribute to spiritual maturity.

Spiritual growth is marked by an increasing conformity to the image of Christ, as Paul describes in Ephesians 4:15: "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head" . This growth is not merely for personal edification but serves the greater purpose of glorifying God and advancing His kingdom on earth.
