Definition and Purpose
In the biblical context, "signs and wonders" refer to miraculous events that serve as divine indicators of God's power and presence. These phenomena are often used to authenticate the message and mission of God's chosen messengers, demonstrating His sovereignty and authority over creation. Signs and wonders are not merely for spectacle but are intended to lead people to faith and obedience.

Old Testament Context
The Old Testament is replete with instances of signs and wonders, often associated with the deliverance and guidance of God's people. One of the most notable examples is the series of plagues in Egypt, culminating in the parting of the Red Sea, which God performed through Moses to liberate the Israelites from bondage (Exodus 7-14). These acts were described as "great signs and wonders" (Deuteronomy 6:22) and served to demonstrate God's supremacy over the Egyptian gods and Pharaoh.

Another significant instance is the miraculous provision during the Israelites' wilderness journey, such as manna from heaven and water from a rock (Exodus 16-17). These signs underscored God's provision and faithfulness to His covenant people.

Prophetic Signs
Prophets in the Old Testament also performed signs to validate their divine messages. Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, where God answered by fire, is a prime example (1 Kings 18:20-39). This event was a powerful sign that affirmed the Lord as the true God and called the people back to worship Him.

New Testament Context
In the New Testament, signs and wonders are prominently associated with the ministry of Jesus Christ and the early Church. Jesus performed numerous miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, and feeding the multitudes, which served as signs of His messianic identity and divine authority. In the Gospel of John, these miracles are specifically referred to as "signs" that reveal Jesus' glory and lead people to believe in Him (John 2:11).

The apostles continued this pattern, performing signs and wonders to confirm the gospel message. Acts 2:43 notes, "A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs." These acts were instrumental in the rapid spread of Christianity and the establishment of the early Church.

Theological Significance
Signs and wonders in the Bible are not ends in themselves but point to greater spiritual truths. They reveal God's character, affirm His covenant promises, and call people to repentance and faith. In the New Testament, they particularly underscore the inauguration of the Kingdom of God through Jesus Christ and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in the Church.

Warnings Against False Signs
Scripture also warns against false signs and wonders, which can be used to deceive. Jesus cautioned that false prophets would arise, performing great signs and wonders to mislead, if possible, even the elect (Matthew 24:24). The apostle Paul echoed this warning, noting that the coming of the lawless one would be accompanied by counterfeit miracles (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Believers are thus urged to discern the source and purpose of signs and wonders, testing them against the truth of God's Word.

Conclusion
While signs and wonders are significant in the biblical narrative, they are ultimately subordinate to the revelation of God through His Word and the person of Jesus Christ. They serve as a testament to God's power and a call to faith, inviting believers to trust in His sovereign will and redemptive plan.
