In the context of the Bible, the concept of "signalled" often relates to the use of signs, signals, or symbols as a means of communication from God to His people or between individuals. These signals can be physical, visual, or even auditory, serving as divine messages or instructions.

Old Testament Instances

1. Noah and the Rainbow: One of the earliest examples of a divine signal is the rainbow given to Noah as a sign of God's covenant. After the flood, God set the rainbow in the sky as a signal of His promise never to destroy the earth with a flood again. Genesis 9:13-15 states, "I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth."

2. Moses and the Burning Bush: In Exodus 3, God uses the burning bush as a signal to Moses, indicating His presence and calling Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The bush that burned without being consumed was a miraculous sign that captured Moses' attention and signalled a divine encounter.

3. The Plagues of Egypt: The plagues were signals to Pharaoh and the Egyptians of God's power and His demand to let the Israelites go. Each plague served as a sign of God's judgment and authority, as seen in Exodus 7-11.

4. The Pillar of Cloud and Fire: During the Israelites' journey through the wilderness, God signalled His presence and guidance through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Exodus 13:21 notes, "And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night."

New Testament Instances

1. The Star of Bethlehem: In the New Testament, the star that guided the Magi to the birthplace of Jesus is a significant signal. This celestial sign indicated the birth of the Messiah and led the wise men to worship Him. Matthew 2:2 records the Magi saying, "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

2. Jesus' Miracles: The miracles performed by Jesus served as signals of His divine authority and the coming of God's kingdom. In John 2:11 , after Jesus turned water into wine, it is noted, "This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him."

3. The Sign of Jonah: Jesus referred to the sign of Jonah as a signal of His own death and resurrection. In Matthew 12:39-40 , Jesus says, "A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

Symbolic and Prophetic Signals

Throughout the Bible, God uses symbolic and prophetic signals to communicate His plans and purposes. Prophets often received visions or dreams that served as signals of future events. For example, Daniel's visions in the Book of Daniel are filled with symbolic imagery that signals future kingdoms and the coming of the Messiah.

Conclusion

The use of signals in the Bible underscores the importance of divine communication and the ways in which God reveals His will to humanity. These signals, whether through natural phenomena, miraculous events, or prophetic visions, serve as reminders of God's sovereignty and His ongoing relationship with His creation.
