Biblical Reference:
Shikkeron is mentioned in the Old Testament within the context of the territorial boundaries of the tribe of Judah. It appears in the Book of Joshua, which details the allotment of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel.

Scriptural Citation:
Joshua 15:11 · "The boundary then went to the northern slope of Ekron, turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah, and extended to Jabneel, ending at the sea."

Geographical Context:
Shikkeron is identified as a location on the border of the tribal inheritance of Judah. The passage in Joshua describes the delineation of Judah's territory, indicating that Shikkeron was situated near the northern boundary, close to the Philistine city of Ekron. The precise location of Shikkeron is not definitively known today, but it is understood to have been in the lowland region of Judah, an area characterized by its fertile plains and strategic position.

Historical and Cultural Significance:
The mention of Shikkeron in the context of Judah's borders highlights the importance of clearly defined tribal territories in ancient Israel. These boundaries were crucial for maintaining the distinct identity and inheritance of each tribe as ordained by God. The proximity of Shikkeron to Ekron, a major Philistine city, suggests that it may have been a site of strategic importance, possibly serving as a point of defense or trade.

Theological Implications:
The delineation of tribal boundaries, including the mention of places like Shikkeron, underscores the fulfillment of God's promises to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The allocation of the land was a tangible expression of God's covenant faithfulness, providing the Israelites with a homeland where they could live according to His laws and purposes. The specific mention of locations such as Shikkeron serves as a reminder of the historical reality of these events and the divine orchestration behind the establishment of Israel in the Promised Land.

Archaeological Insights:
While Shikkeron itself has not been conclusively identified through archaeological findings, the broader region of Judah has been extensively studied. Excavations in the area have uncovered evidence of ancient settlements, fortifications, and agricultural practices, providing a glimpse into the life and culture of the Israelites during the period of the Judges and the monarchy. These findings contribute to our understanding of the historical context in which biblical events took place.

Conclusion:
The brief mention of Shikkeron in the Bible serves as a testament to the detailed record-keeping and territorial organization of ancient Israel. It reflects the broader narrative of God's provision and the establishment of His people in a land flowing with milk and honey, as promised to the patriarchs.

SHIKKERON

shik'-er-on (shikkeron; the King James Version Shicron): A place mentioned in Joshua 15:11 as being on the northern border of Judah, between Ekron and Baalah, Jabneel being beyond, toward the sea. The site is unknown, but Rev. C. Hauser (PEFS, 1907, 289) suggests Tell es-Sellakeh, Northwest of `Akir, remarking that if this were the site the boundary would follow a natural course over the mountain to Jabneel.
