The term "severer" is not directly found in the Bible; however, the concept of severing, or dividing, is present throughout the Scriptures. In biblical terms, severing often refers to the act of separating or distinguishing between different entities, whether they be people, nations, or spiritual truths. This concept is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative and theology, reflecting God's sovereign will and divine order.

Severing in the Old Testament

In the Old Testament, the idea of severing is frequently associated with God's covenant people, Israel. God often commanded the Israelites to be separate from the surrounding nations to maintain their holiness and distinct identity as His chosen people. Leviticus 20:26 states, "You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be My own." Here, the act of setting apart, or severing, underscores the call to holiness and obedience.

The concept of severing is also evident in the sacrificial system, where specific animals were set apart for offerings. This separation was a physical representation of spiritual truths, illustrating the need for purity and atonement. The priests, too, were severed from the rest of the Israelites to serve in the tabernacle, highlighting the theme of consecration and dedication to God's service.

Severing in the New Testament

In the New Testament, the theme of severing continues, particularly in the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus speaks of a future time of separation in the parable of the sheep and the goats, where He will divide the righteous from the unrighteous. Matthew 25:32-33 states, "All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left."

The apostle Paul also addresses the concept of severing in his letters, urging believers to separate themselves from sinful practices and false teachings. In 2 Corinthians 6:17 , Paul quotes the Old Testament, saying, "Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." This call to separation is a call to live a life that reflects the holiness and purity of God.

Spiritual Severing

Beyond physical separation, the Bible speaks of a spiritual severing that occurs through faith in Christ. Believers are severed from the power of sin and death, having been transferred into the kingdom of light. Colossians 1:13 declares, "He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son." This spiritual severing is a transformative act of grace, marking the believer's new identity in Christ.

Eschatological Severing

The concept of severing also has eschatological implications, as seen in the book of Revelation. The final judgment will involve a definitive severing of the righteous from the wicked, culminating in the establishment of God's eternal kingdom. Revelation 20:12 describes this separation: "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books."

In summary, while the specific term "severer" is not used in the Bible, the concept of severing is integral to the biblical narrative, illustrating God's holiness, justice, and redemptive purposes throughout history.
