Overview:
Secu is a location mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically in the context of the narrative surrounding King Saul. It is noted for its geographical and historical significance during the period of the early monarchy in Israel.

Biblical Reference:
Secu is referenced in 1 Samuel 19:22. The passage describes an event during the tumultuous relationship between King Saul and David. Saul, in his relentless pursuit of David, travels to various locations, and Secu is mentioned as part of this pursuit.

1 Samuel 19:22 :
"Finally, Saul himself left for Ramah and came to the great cistern at Secu. He asked, 'Where are Samuel and David?' 'At Naioth in Ramah,' they said."

Historical and Geographical Context:
Secu is identified as a location near Ramah, which is significant as the home of the prophet Samuel. The mention of a "great cistern" suggests that Secu was a place with notable water resources, which would have been important in the arid climate of ancient Israel. The presence of such a cistern indicates that Secu may have been a strategic location for travelers and those seeking refuge.

Theological Significance:
The narrative involving Secu highlights the divine protection over David, who was anointed by God to be the future king of Israel. Despite Saul's efforts to capture David, the Lord's providence is evident as David continually evades Saul's grasp. The mention of Secu in this context underscores the futility of Saul's attempts against God's chosen servant.

Cultural and Religious Insights:
In the broader cultural and religious landscape of ancient Israel, locations like Secu serve as markers of God's unfolding plan for His people. The pursuit of David by Saul, and the subsequent events at places like Secu, illustrate the tension between human authority and divine will. This narrative invites reflection on the sovereignty of God and His ability to protect and guide His chosen leaders.

Conclusion:
While Secu is a minor geographical reference in the biblical text, its inclusion in the narrative of Saul and David provides insight into the historical and theological dynamics of the time. It serves as a reminder of God's providential care and the unfolding of His purposes in the history of Israel.

SECU

se'-ku (sekhu; Codex Vaticanus en Sephei; Codex Alexandrinus en Sokcho; the King James Version Sechu): This name occurs only in the account of David's visit to Samuel (1 Samuel 19:22). Saul, we are told, went to "Ramah, and came to the great well that is in Secu," where he inquired after Samuel and David. It evidently lay between the residence of Saul at Gibeah and Ramah. It is impossible to come to any sure conclusion regarding it. Conder suggested its identification with Khirbet Suweikeh, which lies to the South of Bireh. This is possible, but perhaps we should read with the Septuagint's Codex Vaticanus, "He came to the cistern of the threshing-floor that is on the bare hill" (en to Sephei). The threshing-floors in the East are naturally on high exposed ground where this is possible, and often form part of the area whence water in the rainy season is conducted to cisterns. This might have been a place actually within the city of Ramah.
