Prophetic Intercession

Topical Encyclopedia
Prophetic intercession is a form of prayer that combines the elements of prophecy and intercession, where the intercessor seeks divine insight and revelation to pray effectively for individuals, communities, or nations. This practice is rooted in the belief that God communicates His will and purposes to believers, who then pray according to His guidance to bring about His plans on earth.

Biblical Foundations

The concept of prophetic intercession is grounded in the biblical understanding of prophecy and intercession as distinct yet complementary spiritual activities. Prophecy, in the biblical sense, involves receiving and communicating messages from God, often concerning future events or divine intentions. Intercession, on the other hand, is the act of standing in the gap on behalf of others, pleading with God for mercy, intervention, or blessing.

One of the clearest examples of prophetic intercession in the Bible is found in the life of Moses. In Exodus 32:11-14, Moses intercedes for the Israelites after they sin by worshiping the golden calf. He appeals to God's promises and character, effectively changing the course of events through his intercession. This passage illustrates how an intercessor can receive divine insight into God's will and pray accordingly to avert judgment or bring about change.

Another example is found in the ministry of Daniel. In Daniel 9:2-3, Daniel understands from the Scriptures that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. He then turns to God in prayer and supplication, fasting and wearing sackcloth and ashes, to intercede for the fulfillment of God's promise. Daniel's prayer is informed by prophetic revelation, demonstrating the integration of prophecy and intercession.

Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in prophetic intercession. Romans 8:26-27 states, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." This passage highlights the Spirit's involvement in guiding believers to pray in alignment with God's will, often revealing specific needs or insights that inform their intercession.

Characteristics of Prophetic Intercessors

Prophetic intercessors are often characterized by a deep sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and a commitment to seeking God's heart and mind. They are typically individuals who spend significant time in prayer and the study of Scripture, cultivating a lifestyle of listening to God's voice. Their prayers are marked by boldness and authority, as they pray with the confidence that they are aligning with God's purposes.

Prophetic intercessors may also receive visions, dreams, or impressions that guide their prayers. These revelations are tested against Scripture and the witness of the Holy Spirit to ensure they are genuinely from God. The goal of prophetic intercession is not to manipulate or control outcomes but to partner with God in bringing His kingdom to earth.

Examples in the Early Church

The early church provides further examples of prophetic intercession. In Acts 13:1-3, the church at Antioch is engaged in worship and fasting when the Holy Spirit speaks, instructing them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He has called them. This instance demonstrates how prophetic revelation can guide the church's intercessory efforts, leading to significant missionary endeavors.

Similarly, in Acts 16:9-10, Paul receives a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading for help. Understanding this as a divine directive, Paul and his companions immediately set out for Macedonia, illustrating how prophetic insight can direct intercessory action and mission.

Conclusion

Prophetic intercession remains a vital aspect of Christian prayer life, inviting believers to engage with God's purposes through Spirit-led prayer. By combining the revelatory gifts of prophecy with the compassionate heart of intercession, believers can participate in God's redemptive work in the world.
