Priestly Role of Believers

The concept of the priestly role of believers is a significant theme in the New Testament, reflecting the transformation of the believer's identity and function within the body of Christ. This role is rooted in the Old Testament understanding of priesthood but is expanded and redefined through the work of Jesus Christ.

Old Testament Background

In the Old Testament, the priesthood was primarily associated with the tribe of Levi, particularly the descendants of Aaron, who were set apart to serve in the tabernacle and later in the temple. Their duties included offering sacrifices, maintaining the sanctuary, and mediating between God and the people (Exodus 28-29; Leviticus 8-9). The high priest, in particular, had the unique role of entering the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16).

Fulfillment in Christ

The New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ fulfills and transcends the Old Testament priesthood. He is described as a high priest in the order of Melchizedek, offering a perfect and once-for-all sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 7:26-28). Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has opened a new and living way for believers to approach God (Hebrews 10:19-22).

Believers as a Royal Priesthood

The priestly role of believers is explicitly articulated in the New Testament, particularly in the writings of Peter and John. In 1 Peter 2:5, believers are described as "living stones" being built into a spiritual house to be a "holy priesthood," offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. This idea is further expanded in 1 Peter 2:9, where believers are called a "royal priesthood," a "holy nation," and a "people for God's own possession," tasked with proclaiming the excellencies of Him who called them out of darkness into His marvelous light.

The Book of Revelation also affirms this identity, stating that Jesus has made believers "a kingdom, priests to His God and Father" (Revelation 1:6). This priestly role is not limited to a select group but is the calling of all who are in Christ.

Functions of the Believer's Priesthood

1. Offering Spiritual Sacrifices: Unlike the Old Testament priests who offered animal sacrifices, believers are called to offer spiritual sacrifices. These include acts of worship, prayer, thanksgiving, and service (Hebrews 13:15-16). The Apostle Paul speaks of presenting one's body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, as a spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1).

2. Intercession: Believers are encouraged to pray for one another and for all people, reflecting the intercessory role of the priest (1 Timothy 2:1-2; James 5:16). This includes praying for the salvation of others and for the needs of the church and the world.

3. Proclamation of the Gospel: As a royal priesthood, believers are called to declare the praises of God and to share the message of the gospel with others (1 Peter 2:9). This evangelistic role is central to the believer's priestly function.

4. Mediation: While Christ is the ultimate mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5), believers participate in a mediatory role by bringing others to Christ through their witness and by representing Christ to the world.

Implications for the Church

The priestly role of believers underscores the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers, which affirms that every Christian has direct access to God through Christ and is called to serve in His kingdom. This has profound implications for the life and ministry of the church, emphasizing the active participation of all members in worship, service, and mission. It challenges hierarchical structures that limit ministry to a select few and encourages the empowerment and equipping of all believers to fulfill their God-given roles.
