The Mercy-Seat was adorned with two cherubim of gold, hammered out at the ends of the cover. These cherubim faced each other, with their wings spread upward, overshadowing the Mercy-Seat. This design symbolized the heavenly throne of God, with the cherubim representing angelic beings attending to the divine presence.

Theological Significance

The Mercy-Seat was not merely an ornamental piece but held profound theological significance. It was the focal point of the Day of Atonement rituals, as described in Leviticus 16. On this solemn day, the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies and sprinkle the blood of the sacrificial bull and goat upon the Mercy-Seat, making atonement for the sins of Israel. This act symbolized the covering and forgiveness of sins, pointing to the ultimate atonement through Jesus Christ.

The Mercy-Seat also served as the meeting place between God and His people. In Exodus 25:22, the Lord declared, "And I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony; I will speak with you about all that I command you regarding the Israelites" . This divine promise underscored the Mercy-Seat as a place of revelation and communication, where God would convey His will to Moses and, by extension, to the nation of Israel.

Christological Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the Mercy-Seat finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, uses the term "hilasterion" (often translated as "propitiation" or "atoning sacrifice") to describe Christ's sacrificial death (Romans 3:25). This term is directly related to the concept of the Mercy-Seat, highlighting Jesus as the true and final atonement for sin. Through His shed blood, Christ fulfills the typology of the Mercy-Seat, providing a means for reconciliation between God and humanity.
