Hezekiah, the son of Ahaz, reigned as the king of Judah during a pivotal period in the history of the Israelite nation. His reign is marked by significant religious reforms and a return to the worship of Yahweh, the God of Israel. The prophecies concerning Hezekiah are primarily found in the books of 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, and Isaiah, and they highlight both divine judgment and deliverance.

Prophecy of Deliverance from Assyria

One of the most notable prophecies concerning Hezekiah is the deliverance of Jerusalem from the Assyrian threat. During Hezekiah's reign, the Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah and laid siege to Jerusalem. In response to this dire situation, Hezekiah sought the counsel of the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah delivered a prophecy of divine intervention, assuring Hezekiah that the city would be spared. The prophecy is recorded in 2 Kings 19:32-34 : "Therefore this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: 'He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here or come before it with a shield or build up a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came, he will return; he will not enter this city,' declares the LORD. 'I will defend this city and save it for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.'"

This prophecy was fulfilled when an angel of the LORD struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, forcing Sennacherib to withdraw and return to Nineveh (2 Kings 19:35-36).

Prophecy of Hezekiah's Illness and Recovery

Another significant prophecy concerning Hezekiah is related to his illness and miraculous recovery. Hezekiah became gravely ill, and the prophet Isaiah was sent to him with a message from God, as recorded in 2 Kings 20:1 : "In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, 'This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.'"

In response, Hezekiah prayed earnestly to the LORD, and God heard his prayer. Isaiah was sent back to deliver a new prophecy, promising Hezekiah an additional fifteen years of life. This is recorded in 2 Kings 20:5-6 : "Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of My people, 'This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the house of the LORD. I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.'"

Prophecy of Babylonian Captivity

Despite Hezekiah's faithfulness, a prophecy concerning the future downfall of Judah was also delivered during his reign. After Hezekiah showed the envoys from Babylon all the treasures of his kingdom, Isaiah prophesied that a time would come when everything in his palace would be carried off to Babylon, and some of his descendants would become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. This prophecy is found in 2 Kings 20:16-18 : "Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, 'Hear the word of the LORD: Behold, the days are coming when everything in your house, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD. And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.'"

These prophecies concerning Hezekiah highlight the themes of divine judgment, mercy, and the sovereignty of God over the nations. They underscore the importance of faithfulness to God and the consequences of pride and disobedience.
