The account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the most vivid examples of death as a divine judgment in the Bible. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, along with the surrounding region, were notorious for their grave sins, which included sexual immorality and other forms of wickedness. The narrative is primarily found in
Genesis 18 and 19.
In
Genesis 18:20-21 , the LORD reveals to Abraham His intention to investigate the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah: "Then the LORD said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great. Because their sin is so grievous, I will go down to see if their actions fully justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.'"
The gravity of the sins committed by the inhabitants of Sodom is further illustrated in
Genesis 19, where two angels visit the city and are met with hostility and attempted sexual violence by the men of Sodom.
Genesis 19:4-5 states, "Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house. They called out to Lot, saying, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!'"
The divine judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah is executed swiftly and decisively. In
Genesis 19:24-25 , the text records, "Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus He overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground."
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah serves as a sobering reminder of God's judgment against sin. The New Testament also references this event as a warning. In
2 Peter 2:6 , it is written, "If He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly..."
The narrative of Sodom and Gomorrah underscores the seriousness with which God views sin and the reality of divine judgment. The death of the Sodomites is portrayed as a direct consequence of their unrepentant wickedness, serving as a historical and theological lesson on the consequences of defying God's moral order.
