The term "inquireth" is an archaic form of the verb "inquire," which means to ask for information or seek knowledge. In the context of the Bible, it often refers to seeking guidance, wisdom, or understanding from God or His appointed leaders. The act of inquiring is a demonstration of humility and recognition of one's need for divine direction.

Biblical Usage:

1. Seeking God’s Guidance:
In the Old Testament, the act of inquiring of the Lord is frequently mentioned as a practice of the faithful. For instance, King David is noted for inquiring of the Lord before making significant decisions. In 1 Samuel 23:2 , it is recorded, "So David inquired of the LORD, 'Shall I go and attack these Philistines?' And the LORD said to David, 'Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.'"

2. Prophets and Priests:
The Israelites often inquired of God through prophets and priests. This was a means of seeking divine will and understanding. In 1 Samuel 9:9 , it is explained, "(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he would say, 'Come, let us go to the seer,' for the prophet of today was formerly called the seer.)"

3. The Urim and Thummim:
The high priest used the Urim and Thummim to inquire of God on behalf of the people. This practice is mentioned in passages such as Numbers 27:21 , "He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his command, he and the entire congregation of the Israelites will go out and come in."

4. Inquiring with a Sincere Heart:
The Bible emphasizes the importance of inquiring with a sincere and humble heart. In Psalm 27:4 , David expresses his desire to seek the Lord: "One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His temple."

5. Warnings Against False Inquiries:
Scripture also warns against inquiring of false gods or using divination. In 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 , it is noted, "So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and he did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse."

Theological Significance:

Inquiring of the Lord is a vital aspect of a believer's relationship with God. It reflects a dependence on divine wisdom rather than human understanding. The practice underscores the belief that God is actively involved in the lives of His people and is willing to provide guidance to those who earnestly seek Him. The Bible encourages believers to approach God with a heart of faith and obedience, trusting that He will lead them in the paths of righteousness.
