Gittaim is a biblical location mentioned in the Old Testament, notable for its association with the Benjamites and the narrative of the remnant of Saul's lineage. The name "Gittaim" is derived from the Hebrew word meaning "two winepresses," suggesting a place of agricultural significance.

Biblical References:

1. 2 Samuel 4:3 : "and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and have lived there as foreigners to this day." This verse provides the earliest mention of Gittaim, indicating that it became a refuge for the Beerothites. The Beerothites were originally from Beeroth, one of the cities of the Gibeonites, who were Hivites that made a treaty with Israel during the conquest of Canaan (Joshua 9). After the murder of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, the Beerothites sought refuge in Gittaim, highlighting its role as a place of asylum.

2. Nehemiah 11:33 : "Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim," This verse lists Gittaim among the towns where the people of Judah and Benjamin resettled after the Babylonian exile. The inclusion of Gittaim in this list suggests its continued habitation and importance during the post-exilic period. It was part of the efforts led by Nehemiah to repopulate Jerusalem and its surrounding areas, emphasizing the restoration of the community and the reestablishment of the Jewish identity in the land.

Historical and Geographical Context:

The exact location of Gittaim remains uncertain, as it is not definitively identified with any known archaeological site today. However, its mention alongside other towns in the territory of Benjamin suggests it was situated within or near this tribal allotment. The historical context of Gittaim as a refuge for the Beerothites and a resettlement site for returning exiles underscores its role in the broader narrative of Israel's history, particularly in relation to the tribe of Benjamin.

Theological Significance:

Gittaim's mention in the biblical narrative, though brief, reflects themes of refuge, survival, and restoration. The movement of the Beerothites to Gittaim after the fall of Saul's house illustrates the shifting dynamics of power and the search for safety amidst political upheaval. Furthermore, its inclusion in the list of resettled towns in Nehemiah highlights the faithfulness of God in restoring His people to their land, fulfilling promises of return and renewal after exile.

In summary, Gittaim serves as a testament to the resilience of the Israelite community and the unfolding of God's providential plan throughout the history of His people. Its role as a place of refuge and resettlement underscores the themes of divine protection and restoration that permeate the biblical narrative.

GITTAIM

git'-a-im (gittayim): The town to which the Beerothites tied, and where they lived as gerim, or protected strangers (2 Samuel 4:3). The place need not have been beyond the boundaries of Benjamin, so it may be identical with Gittaim of Nehemiah 11:33, which was occupied by Benjamites after the exile. It is named with Hazor and Ramah; but so far the site has not been discovered.
