The term "expended" refers to the act of using up or consuming resources, energy, or effort. In a biblical context, this concept can be explored through various passages and themes that illustrate the use of resources, both material and spiritual, for the fulfillment of God's purposes.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the idea of expending resources is often associated with offerings and sacrifices. The Israelites were commanded to bring offerings to the Lord, which required the expenditure of their livestock, grain, and other resources. For example, in Leviticus 1:3-4 , the burnt offering is described: "If one's offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer an unblemished male. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, so that he may be accepted by the LORD. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so that it may be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him."

The construction of the Tabernacle also involved the expenditure of resources. In Exodus 35:21-29 , the Israelites are described as bringing freewill offerings for the work of the Tabernacle: "Everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit prompted him came and brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments."

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the concept of expending oneself is often linked to the idea of self-sacrifice and service. Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of this, as He expended His life for the salvation of humanity. In Philippians 2:7-8 , it is written: "But He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross."

The Apostle Paul also speaks of expending himself for the sake of the Gospel. In 2 Corinthians 12:15 , Paul expresses his willingness to give of himself for the spiritual well-being of others: "So I will most gladly spend and be expended for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?"

Spiritual Implications

The expenditure of resources, time, and energy in the service of God is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. Believers are encouraged to use their gifts and resources for the edification of the church and the advancement of God's kingdom. In Romans 12:1 , Paul urges believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices: "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."

The concept of expending oneself is also tied to the idea of stewardship. Christians are called to be faithful stewards of the resources God has entrusted to them, using them wisely and generously for His glory. In 1 Peter 4:10 , it is written: "As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another."

Conclusion

The biblical concept of expending resources and oneself is deeply rooted in the principles of sacrifice, service, and stewardship. Whether through offerings, personal sacrifice, or the use of spiritual gifts, the act of expending is ultimately an expression of devotion and obedience to God.
