Exaltation Through God

Exaltation through God is a recurring theme in the Bible, emphasizing the divine principle that true honor and elevation come from the Lord. This concept is woven throughout Scripture, illustrating that human efforts to achieve greatness are ultimately futile without God's blessing and intervention.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for understanding exaltation as a divine act. In 1 Samuel 2:7, Hannah's prayer acknowledges, "The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts." This verse highlights God's sovereign control over human circumstances, including the ability to elevate individuals according to His will.

The Psalms frequently echo this theme. Psalm 75:6-7 states, "For exaltation comes neither from east nor west, nor out of the desert, but it is God who judges; He brings one down and exalts another." This passage underscores that exaltation is not a result of human effort or geographical advantage but is determined by God's righteous judgment.

Exaltation of the Humble

A key aspect of biblical exaltation is the elevation of the humble. Proverbs 3:34 declares, "He mocks the mockers but gives grace to the humble." This principle is further illustrated in the life of Joseph, who, despite being sold into slavery and imprisoned, was exalted by God to a position of power in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-41).

The prophet Isaiah also speaks to this theme, proclaiming in Isaiah 57:15 , "For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: 'I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.'" Here, God promises to dwell with and uplift those who are humble and contrite.

New Testament Fulfillment

The New Testament continues and fulfills the theme of exaltation through God, particularly through the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. In the Beatitudes, Jesus declares, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5), affirming that humility leads to divine exaltation.

Jesus Himself exemplifies this principle. Philippians 2:8-9 describes how Christ "humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names." Christ's exaltation is the ultimate demonstration of God's power to elevate the humble.

The apostle James reiterates this truth in James 4:10 , "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you." This exhortation encourages believers to trust in God's timing and methods for exaltation, rather than seeking self-promotion.

Exaltation in the Life of Believers

For believers, exaltation through God is both a present reality and a future hope. In 1 Peter 5:6 , Christians are instructed, "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you." This promise assures believers that God will lift them up according to His perfect timing and purpose.

The ultimate exaltation for believers is found in eternal life with Christ. Romans 8:17 states, "And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him." This future exaltation is the culmination of God's redemptive work, where believers are glorified with Christ in His eternal kingdom.

In summary, exaltation through God is a profound biblical theme that emphasizes God's sovereignty, the elevation of the humble, and the ultimate glorification of believers in Christ. Through humility and faith, believers are invited to experience God's exaltation both in this life and in eternity.
