Dealing with Unresolved Issues

In the Christian life, unresolved issues can manifest in various forms, including interpersonal conflicts, unconfessed sin, or lingering doubts and questions about faith. The Bible provides guidance on addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation, forgiveness, and seeking God's wisdom.

Reconciliation and Forgiveness

The Bible underscores the necessity of reconciliation in relationships. Jesus teaches the importance of resolving conflicts promptly in Matthew 5:23-24 : "Therefore if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift." This passage highlights the priority of mending relationships even before engaging in acts of worship.

Forgiveness is a crucial component in dealing with unresolved issues. In Matthew 18:21-22 , Peter asks Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who sins against him, to which Jesus replies, "I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!" This teaching emphasizes the boundless nature of forgiveness, reflecting God's own forgiveness towards humanity.

Unconfessed Sin

Unresolved sin can hinder one's relationship with God. The Bible encourages believers to confess their sins and seek God's forgiveness. In 1 John 1:9 , it is written, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Confession is a step towards spiritual healing and restoration.

The account of David and Nathan in 2 Samuel 12 illustrates the consequences of unconfessed sin and the path to repentance. After Nathan confronts David about his sin with Bathsheba, David acknowledges his wrongdoing, saying, "I have sinned against the LORD" (2 Samuel 12:13). This acknowledgment leads to God's forgiveness, though David still faces the consequences of his actions.

Seeking God's Wisdom

When dealing with unresolved issues, seeking divine wisdom is essential. James 1:5 encourages believers to ask God for wisdom: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." This promise assures believers that God is willing to provide guidance and clarity in times of uncertainty.

The book of Proverbs is replete with wisdom for handling life's challenges. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Trusting in God's guidance can lead to resolution and peace.

Prayer and Patience

Prayer is a powerful tool in addressing unresolved issues. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs believers, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Through prayer, believers can find peace and direction.

Patience is also vital when dealing with unresolved matters. Romans 12:12 encourages believers to be "joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer." Patience allows time for God to work in situations and hearts, bringing about His perfect will.

Community and Accountability

The Christian community plays a significant role in resolving issues. Galatians 6:1-2 advises, "Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Accountability and support from fellow believers can aid in overcoming unresolved issues.

In summary, the Bible provides a comprehensive approach to dealing with unresolved issues, emphasizing reconciliation, forgiveness, confession, seeking wisdom, prayer, patience, and community support. These principles guide believers towards resolution and spiritual growth.
