Cosmology, in the context of the Bible, refers to the understanding and interpretation of the universe's origin, structure, and purpose as revealed through Scripture. The Bible provides a framework for understanding the cosmos, emphasizing the sovereignty and creative power of God.

Creation of the Universe

The Bible begins with a clear declaration of God's role as the Creator of the universe. Genesis 1:1 states, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This foundational verse establishes that the universe is not a product of random chance but the intentional act of a divine Creator. The creation account in Genesis 1 describes a six-day process in which God systematically brings order and life into existence, culminating in the creation of humanity in His image (Genesis 1:26-27).

The Heavens and the Earth

The Bible frequently refers to "the heavens and the earth" as a way of encompassing all of creation. The heavens are depicted as the realm of God's majesty and glory. Psalm 19:1 declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." This verse highlights the belief that the cosmos itself is a testament to God's greatness and power.

The Order and Sustenance of Creation

Scripture emphasizes the orderliness and sustenance of the universe by God's command. Colossians 1:16-17 affirms, "For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." This passage underscores the belief that Christ is central to creation and its continued existence.

The Purpose of Creation

The Bible presents creation as having a purpose that aligns with God's will and glory. Isaiah 45:18 states, "For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens—He is God, who formed the earth and made it; He established it; He did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited." This verse suggests that the earth was designed to be a dwelling place for life, particularly human life, which is meant to reflect God's image and steward His creation.

The New Creation

Biblical cosmology also includes the promise of a new creation. Revelation 21:1 describes a future transformation: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more." This eschatological vision points to the ultimate renewal and restoration of the cosmos, free from the corruption of sin.

Theological Implications

The biblical view of cosmology carries significant theological implications. It affirms God's omnipotence, wisdom, and intentionality in creation. It also establishes humanity's unique role and responsibility within the created order. Romans 1:20 reflects on the evidence of God's attributes in creation: "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse."

In summary, biblical cosmology presents a universe that is purposefully created, sustained, and ultimately redeemed by God, with humanity playing a central role in His divine plan.
