Consideration and Reflection

Consideration and reflection are integral aspects of the Christian life, deeply rooted in the biblical tradition. These practices involve thoughtful contemplation and meditation on God's Word, His creation, and His will for humanity. The Bible encourages believers to engage in these activities as a means of spiritual growth, understanding, and alignment with God's purposes.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of consideration is often linked with wisdom and understanding in the Scriptures. Proverbs 2:2-5 states, "making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God." Here, consideration is portrayed as an active pursuit of wisdom, requiring intentional focus and effort.

Reflection, on the other hand, is closely associated with meditation on God's Word. Psalm 1:2 describes the blessed man as one whose "delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night." This verse highlights the importance of continuous reflection on Scripture as a source of spiritual nourishment and guidance.

Examples in Scripture

Throughout the Bible, numerous figures exemplify the practice of consideration and reflection. King David, for instance, often engaged in reflection, as seen in Psalm 19:14 : "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." David's life demonstrates a commitment to aligning his thoughts and actions with God's will through reflective prayer and meditation.

The New Testament also emphasizes the importance of reflection. In Philippians 4:8 , the Apostle Paul instructs believers, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things." This exhortation encourages Christians to focus their minds on virtuous and godly matters, fostering a reflective mindset that leads to spiritual maturity.

Practical Application

Consideration and reflection are not merely intellectual exercises but are meant to transform the believer's life. James 1:22-25 warns against being hearers of the Word only, urging believers to be doers as well: "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does."

Incorporating consideration and reflection into daily life involves setting aside time for prayer, Bible study, and meditation. It requires a heart open to the Holy Spirit's guidance and a willingness to apply biblical truths to one's life. By doing so, believers can grow in their relationship with God, gain deeper insights into His character, and live out their faith more fully.
