Be Ready to Move

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of being ready to move is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the importance of obedience, faith, and readiness to follow God's leading. This theme is evident in both the Old and New Testaments, where God's people are often called to leave their current circumstances and step into the unknown, trusting in His divine plan.

Old Testament Examples

1. Abraham's Call: One of the most prominent examples is the call of Abram (later Abraham). In Genesis 12:1, God commands Abram, "Go forth from your country, your kindred, and your father's house to the land I will show you." Abram's readiness to move, despite not knowing his destination, exemplifies faith and obedience. His willingness to leave everything familiar set the foundation for the covenant relationship between God and the Israelites.

2. The Exodus: The Israelites' exodus from Egypt is another significant instance. In Exodus 12:11, during the Passover, the Israelites are instructed to eat with "your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover." This readiness to move at a moment's notice underscores the urgency and trust required to follow God's deliverance.

3. The Wilderness Journey: Throughout their journey in the wilderness, the Israelites had to be prepared to move whenever the cloud lifted from the tabernacle (Numbers 9:17-23). This constant state of readiness taught reliance on God's guidance and timing.

New Testament Examples

1. The Disciples' Call: In the New Testament, Jesus calls His disciples to be ready to leave their livelihoods and follow Him. In Matthew 4:19-20, Jesus says to Peter and Andrew, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him, demonstrating a readiness to move and embrace a new mission.

2. The Great Commission: After His resurrection, Jesus commands His disciples in Matthew 28:19, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations." This directive requires a readiness to move beyond their comfort zones and spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

3. Paul's Missionary Journeys: The Apostle Paul exemplifies readiness to move in his missionary journeys. In Acts 16:9-10, Paul receives a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading for help. "After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them." Paul's immediate response to God's call highlights his readiness to move wherever the Spirit led.

Spiritual Readiness

The theme of being ready to move extends beyond physical relocation. It also encompasses spiritual readiness to respond to God's call. Believers are encouraged to be vigilant and prepared for Christ's return. In Matthew 24:44, Jesus warns, "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect."

Practical Implications

Being ready to move involves a heart posture of surrender and trust in God's sovereignty. It requires believers to hold loosely to earthly attachments and be willing to embrace change for the sake of the Gospel. This readiness is cultivated through prayer, study of Scripture, and a deepening relationship with God, enabling believers to discern His voice and direction in their lives.
