Azareel, also spelled Azarel, is a name found in the Old Testament, signifying "God has helped" or "whom God has helped." This name is borne by several individuals in the biblical narrative, each playing distinct roles within the context of Israel's history and religious life.

1. Azareel, the Warrior of David: Azareel is listed among the mighty warriors who served under King David. In 1 Chronicles 12:6, he is mentioned as one of the Benjamite warriors who joined David at Ziklag. These warriors were known for their skill and loyalty, contributing to David's military strength during his rise to kingship. The Berean Standard Bible states: "Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite; Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites."

2. Azareel, the Leader of the Tribe of Dan: In 1 Chronicles 27:22, Azareel is identified as the leader of the tribe of Dan during the reign of King David. This passage is part of a larger list detailing the leaders of the tribes of Israel, who were responsible for military and administrative duties. The BSB records: "Over Dan was Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel."

3. Azareel, the Musician: Another Azareel is noted in the context of temple worship. In 1 Chronicles 25:18, he is mentioned as one of the sons of Heman, who were appointed by David to prophesy with musical instruments in the service of the house of the Lord. This highlights the role of music and prophecy in the worship practices of ancient Israel. The BSB states: "the eleventh to Azarel, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all."

4. Azareel, the Priest: In the post-exilic period, Azareel is mentioned as one of the priests who returned with Zerubbabel and Jeshua to Jerusalem. In Nehemiah 12:36, he is part of the procession during the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, indicating his involvement in the religious restoration of the community. The BSB notes: "and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession."

The name Azareel, therefore, is associated with various roles, from military leadership and tribal governance to musical and priestly functions. Each mention of Azareel reflects the diverse ways in which individuals contributed to the life and faith of Israel, underscoring the theme of divine assistance and service to God.
