Etymology and Meaning:
The name "Alameth" is derived from the Hebrew root "עַלְמֶת" (Almeth), which is often understood to mean "concealment" or "hidden." This etymology reflects a common practice in biblical times of naming places and people with meanings that convey particular characteristics or historical events associated with them.

Biblical References:
Alameth is mentioned in the genealogical records of the tribe of Benjamin. In 1 Chronicles 7:8, Alameth is listed as one of the sons of Becher, who was a son of Benjamin. The verse states: "The sons of Becher: Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth, and Alameth. All these were the sons of Becher."

Additionally, Alameth is referenced in 1 Chronicles 6:60, where it is mentioned as a Levitical city. The verse reads: "From the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba, Alemeth, and Anathoth, together with their pasturelands." Here, the city of Alameth is noted as part of the allotment given to the Levites, indicating its significance in the religious and cultural life of ancient Israel.

Historical and Cultural Context:
The tribe of Benjamin, to which Alameth is connected, held a unique position among the tribes of Israel. As the smallest tribe, Benjamin was known for its fierce warriors and strategic location between the northern and southern tribes. The mention of Alameth within the genealogical and territorial records underscores the importance of maintaining detailed family and tribal histories, which were crucial for inheritance rights and tribal identity.

The allocation of cities like Alameth to the Levites highlights the tribe of Levi's role in religious duties and temple service. The Levites were distributed among the tribes of Israel to perform priestly functions and to teach the Law, ensuring that the worship of Yahweh remained central to the life of the nation.

Theological Significance:
The inclusion of Alameth in the biblical narrative, though brief, serves as a reminder of God's providence and the fulfillment of His promises to the tribes of Israel. The detailed genealogies and territorial assignments reflect the order and structure that God established for His people. Each name and place, including Alameth, contributes to the overarching account of God's covenant relationship with Israel.

In a broader theological context, the mention of Levitical cities like Alameth emphasizes the importance of worship and the centrality of God's presence among His people. The Levites' role in maintaining the spiritual health of the nation points to the necessity of faithful stewardship and obedience to God's commands.

Archaeological Insights:
While specific archaeological evidence directly linked to Alameth is limited, the general region associated with the tribe of Benjamin has yielded numerous findings that illuminate the historical and cultural backdrop of the biblical narrative. Excavations in areas such as Gibeon and Geba provide insights into the settlement patterns, architectural styles, and daily life of the inhabitants during the biblical period.

Conclusion:
The entry for Alameth in the Bible Encyclopedia highlights its role within the genealogical and territorial framework of ancient Israel. As a city associated with the tribe of Benjamin and the Levitical priesthood, Alameth contributes to the rich tapestry of biblical history and theology, underscoring themes of divine order, covenant faithfulness, and the centrality of worship in the life of God's people.
