1Then the LORD God showed me a basket of summer fruit. 2And He asked, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD said to me: “Like this fruit, the time is ripe for My people of Israel; I will spare them no longer. 3“And in that day, the songs of the Temple shall become wailings”, says the LORD God; “There shall be many dead bodies everywhere; they shall carry them out of the city in silence. 4“Hear this, you that abuse the needy, and do away with the poor of the land, 5While you say, ‘When will the New Moon be over, so that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath be ended, that we may market wheat, while making the ephah small, and the shekel (price) great, cheating with false and deceitful measures? 6That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yes, and sell the sweepings with the wheat?’ 7The LORD has sworn by Himself, “Surely, I will never forget any of their evil deeds. 8Shall the land not tremble for this, and everyone that dwells in the land mourn? And the whole land shall be stirred up like the Nile River at flood-stage; and it shall then lower again, like the river of Egypt. 9And in that day”, says the LORD God, “I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the middle of the day; 10And I will turn your religious festivals into mourning, and all your singing into weeping; and I will cause you to wear sackcloth, with every head shaved; and I will make that time like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. 11“The days are coming”, says the LORD God, “That I will send a famine through the land - not a famine of food, nor for water - but of hearing the words of the LORD; 12And they shall stagger from sea to sea, and from the north to the east, they shall run about searching for the word of the LORD, but shall not find it. 13In that day the beautiful young women and the young men shall faint from thirst. 14These that swear by the shameful idols of Samaria - who say, ‘As surely as your god of Dan lives’; and, ‘As sure as the god of Beersheba lives’ - they shall fall, never to rise again.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
