Job's Character and Wealth

(James 5:7-12)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.1There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.1There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.1There was a man in the country of Uz named Job. He was a man of perfect integrity, who feared God and turned away from evil.
2He had seven sons and three daughters,2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.2Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.2He had seven sons and three daughters.
3and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.3He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.3His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.3His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
4His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.4His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.5And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.5When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually.5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.5Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought: Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts. This was Job's regular practice.

Satan's First Attack

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
6One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.6One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.
7The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it."7The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”7The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."7And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.7The LORD asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" "From roaming through the earth," Satan answered Him, "and walking around on it."
8Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."8And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?”8The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil."8And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?8Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil."
9"Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.9Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason?9Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?9Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?

10"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.10Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.10"Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.10Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.10Haven't You placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."11But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.”11"But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face."11But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.11But stretch out Your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face."
12The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.12And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.12Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him." So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.12And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.12"Very well," the LORD told Satan, "everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself." So Satan left the LORD's presence.

They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."15And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.15the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. 19when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. 21and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”21He said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD."21And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.21saying: Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will leave this life.
