The LORD now said to Moses,1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
“Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes.”2Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel, from their camp in the wilderness of Paran.3And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
These were the tribes and the names of their leaders: Tribe Leader Reuben Shammua son of Zaccur4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

Naphtali Nahbi son of Vophsi14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
Gad Geuel son of Maki15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
These are the names of the men Moses sent out to explore the land. (Moses called Hoshea son of Nun by the name Joshua.)16These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
Moses gave the men these instructions as he sent them out to explore the land: “Go north through the Negev into the hill country.17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
See what the land is like, and find out whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many.18And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
See what kind of land they live in. Is it good or bad? Do their towns have walls, or are they unprotected like open camps?19And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
Is the soil fertile or poor? Are there many trees? Do your best to bring back samples of the crops you see.” (It happened to be the season for harvesting the first ripe grapes.)20And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
So they went up and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.21So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
Going north, they passed through the Negev and arrived at Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai—all descendants of Anak—lived. (The ancient town of Hebron was founded seven years before the Egyptian city of Zoan.)22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs.23And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol (which means “cluster”), because of the cluster of grapes the Israelite men cut there. The Scouting Report24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land.26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces.27And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak!28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.”29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!”31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge.32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
