But if you come to betray me to my enemies when I have not harmed you, may the God of our ancestors take notice and judge!" |
| 18Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said: “We are yours, O David; We are on your side, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, And peace to your helpers! For your God helps you.” So David received them, and made them captains of the troop. | 18But a spirit empowered Amasai, the leader of the thirty warriors, and he said: "We are yours, O David! We support you, O son of Jesse! May you greatly prosper! May those who help you prosper! Indeed your God helps you!" So David accepted them and made them leaders of raiding bands. |
| 19And some from Manasseh defected to David when he was going with the Philistines to battle against Saul; but they did not help them, for the lords of the Philistines sent him away by agreement, saying, “He may defect to his master Saul and endanger our heads.” | 19Some men from Manasseh joined David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (But in the end they did not help the Philistines because, after taking counsel, the Philistine lords sent David away, saying: "It would be disastrous for us if he deserts to his master Saul.") |

| 24of the sons of Judah bearing shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred armed for war; | 24From Judah came 6,800 trained warriors carrying shields and spears. |
| 25of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor fit for war, seven thousand one hundred; | 25From Simeon there were 7,100 warriors. |

| 38All these men of war, who could keep ranks, came to Hebron with a loyal heart, to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel were of one mind to make David king. | 38All these men were warriors who were ready to march.
