When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. | 1When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to him, saying, "I am God Almighty. Live in My presence and be blameless. |
And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” | 2I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you greatly." |
Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: | 3Then Abram fell facedown and God spoke with him: " |
“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. | 4As for Me, My covenant is with you: you will become the father of many nations. |
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. | 5Your name will no longer be Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I will make you the father of many nations. |
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. | 6I will make you extremely fruitful and will make nations and kings come from you. |
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. | 7I will keep My covenant between Me and you, and your future offspring throughout their generations, as an everlasting covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring after you. |
Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” | 8And to you and your future offspring I will give the land where you are residing--all the land of Canaan--as an eternal possession, and I will be their God." |
And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. | 9God also said to Abraham, "As for you, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations are to keep My covenant. |
This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; | 10This is My covenant, which you are to keep, between Me and you and your offspring after you: Every one of your males must be circumcised. |
and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. | 11You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin to serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and you. |
He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. | 12Throughout your generations, every male among you at eight days old is to be circumcised. This includes a slave born in your house and one purchased with money from any foreigner. The one who is not your offspring, |
He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. | 13a slave born in your house, as well as one purchased with money, must be circumcised. My covenant will be marked in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. |
And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” | 14If any male is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that man will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant." |
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. | 15God said to Abraham, "As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah will be her name. |
And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.” | 16I will bless her; indeed, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will produce nations; kings of peoples will come from her." |
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” | 17Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself, "Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, give birth?" |
And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!” | 18So Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael were acceptable to You!" |
Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. | 19But God said, "No. Your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his future offspring. |
And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. | 20As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will certainly bless him; I will make him fruitful and will multiply him greatly. He will father 12 tribal leaders, and I will make him into a great nation. |
But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.” | 21But I will confirm My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year." |
Then He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. | 22When He finished talking with him, God withdrew from Abraham. |
So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him. | 23Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all the slaves born in his house or purchased with his money--every male among the members of Abraham's household--and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that very day, just as God had said to him. |
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | 24Abraham was 99 years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised, |
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | 25and his son Ishmael was 13 years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised. |
That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael; | 26On that same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised. |
and all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. | 27And all the men of his household--both slaves born in his house and those purchased with money from a foreigner--were circumcised with him. |
