To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.” | 1I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.” |
I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up. | 2I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse. |
My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: | 3My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: |
“LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. | 4“O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! |
Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah | 5Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah |
Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them. | 6Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! |
“And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. | 7“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you. |
Deliver me from all my transgressions; Do not make me the reproach of the foolish. | 8Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool! |
I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it. | 9I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it. |
Remove Your plague from me; I am consumed by the blow of Your hand. | 10Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand. |
When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor. Selah | 11When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah |
“Hear my prayer, O LORD, And give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner, as all my fathers were. | 12“Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. |
Remove Your gaze from me, that I may regain strength, Before I go away and am no more.” | 13Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!” |
