New International Version | New Living Translation |
Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: | 1Then the LORD spoke to Jonah a second time: |
"Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you." | 2“Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, and deliver the message I have given you.” |
Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. | 3This time Jonah obeyed the LORD’s command and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to see it all. |
Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city, proclaiming, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown." | 4On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!” |
The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. | 5The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow. |
When Jonah's warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. | 6When the king of Nineveh heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes. |
This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. | 7Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city: “No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all. |
But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. | 8People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence. |
Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish." | 9Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.” |
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. | 10When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened. |
