Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. |
so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. | 2So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. |
So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. | 3After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. |
He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. | 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." | 5And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. | 6But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence. |
The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. | 7Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. |
And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. | 8He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai." |
Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." | 9Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority." |
The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count." | 10Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count." |
The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. | 11The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. |
He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers." | 12"He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone's hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers." |
She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." | 13Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?" |
That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. | 14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. |
So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. |
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael. | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. |
