New International Version | International Standard Version |
Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? | 1 Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? |
In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. | 2The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. |
He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. | 3For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. |
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. | 4With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." |
His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. | 5Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. |
He says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me." He swears, "No one will ever do me harm." | 6They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." |
His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. | 7Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. |
He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; | 8They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. |
like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. | 9Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. |
His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. | 10The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. |
He says to himself, "God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees." | 11The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." |
Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. | 12Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! |
Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? | 13Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? |
But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. | 14But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. |
Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. |
The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. |
You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, | 17LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, |
defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. | 18to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. |
