NET Bible | New International Version |
A song of ascents. O LORD, for David's sake remember all his strenuous effort, | 1A song of ascents. LORD, remember David and all his self-denial. |
and how he made a vow to the LORD, and swore an oath to the powerful ruler of Jacob. | 2He swore an oath to the LORD, he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: |
He said, "I will not enter my own home, or get into my bed. | 3"I will not enter my house or go to my bed, |
I will not allow my eyes to sleep, or my eyelids to slumber, | 4I will allow no sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, |
until I find a place for the LORD, a fine dwelling place for the powerful ruler of Jacob." | 5till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob." |
Look, we heard about it in Ephrathah, we found it in the territory of Jaar. | 6We heard it in Ephrathah, we came upon it in the fields of Jaar: |
Let us go to his dwelling place! Let us worship before his footstool! | 7"Let us go to his dwelling place, let us worship at his footstool, saying, |
Ascend, O LORD, to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength! | 8Arise, LORD, and come to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. |
May your priests be clothed with integrity! May your loyal followers shout for joy! | 9May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy.'" |
For the sake of David, your servant, do not reject your chosen king! | 10For the sake of your servant David, do not reject your anointed one. |
The LORD made a reliable promise to David; he will not go back on his word. He said, "I will place one of your descendants on your throne. | 11The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: "One of your own descendants I will place on your throne. |
If your sons keep my covenant and the rules I teach them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever." | 12If your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever." |
Certainly the LORD has chosen Zion; he decided to make it his home. | 13For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying, |
He said, "This will be my resting place forever; I will live here, for I have chosen it. | 14"This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it. |
I will abundantly supply what she needs; I will give her poor all the food they need. | 15I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor I will satisfy with food. |
I will protect her priests, and her godly people will shout exuberantly. | 16I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her faithful people will ever sing for joy. |
There I will make David strong; I have determined that my chosen king's dynasty will continue. | 17"Here I will make a horn grow for David and set up a lamp for my anointed one. |
I will humiliate his enemies, and his crown will shine. | 18I will clothe his enemies with shame, but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown." |
