Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. |
So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him. | 2So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. |
So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife. | 3After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. |
He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai. | 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!" | 5And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai. | 6But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence. |
The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur. | 7Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. |
He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai." | 8He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai." |
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority. | 9Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority." |
I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count." | 10Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count." |
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans. | 11The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. |
He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers." | 12"He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone's hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers." |
So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!" | 13Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?" |
That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.) | 14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. |
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. |
(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.) | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. |
