A Song of Ascents. Remember, O LORD, on David's behalf, All his affliction; | 1LORD, remember David and all that he suffered. |
How he swore to the LORD And vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, | 2He made a solemn promise to the LORD. He vowed to the Mighty One of Israel, |
"Surely I will not enter my house, Nor lie on my bed; | 3“I will not go home; I will not let myself rest. |
I will not give sleep to my eyes Or slumber to my eyelids, | 4I will not let my eyes sleep nor close my eyelids in slumber |
Until I find a place for the LORD, A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob." | 5until I find a place to build a house for the LORD, a sanctuary for the Mighty One of Israel.” |
Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah, We found it in the field of Jaar. | 6We heard that the Ark was in Ephrathah; then we found it in the distant countryside of Jaar. |
Let us go into His dwelling place; Let us worship at His footstool. | 7Let us go to the sanctuary of the LORD; let us worship at the footstool of his throne. |
Arise, O LORD, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength. | 8Arise, O LORD, and enter your resting place, along with the Ark, the symbol of your power. |
Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, And let Your godly ones sing for joy. | 9May your priests be clothed in godliness; may your loyal servants sing for joy. |
For the sake of David Your servant, Do not turn away the face of Your anointed. | 10For the sake of your servant David, do not reject the king you have anointed. |
The LORD has sworn to David A truth from which He will not turn back: "Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne. | 11The LORD swore an oath to David with a promise he will never take back: “I will place one of your descendants on your throne. |
"If your sons will keep My covenant And My testimony which I will teach them, Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forever." | 12If your descendants obey the terms of my covenant and the laws that I teach them, then your royal line will continue forever and ever.” |
For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His habitation. | 13For the LORD has chosen Jerusalem ; he has desired it for his home. |
"This is My resting place forever; Here I will dwell, for I have desired it. | 14“This is my resting place forever,” he said. “I will live here, for this is the home I desired. |
"I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her needy with bread. | 15I will bless this city and make it prosperous; I will satisfy its poor with food. |
"Her priests also I will clothe with salvation, And her godly ones will sing aloud for joy. | 16I will clothe its priests with godliness; its faithful servants will sing for joy. |
"There I will cause the horn of David to spring forth; I have prepared a lamp for Mine anointed. | 17Here I will increase the power of David; my anointed one will be a light for my people. |
"His enemies I will clothe with shame, But upon himself his crown shall shine." | 18I will clothe his enemies with shame, but he will be a glorious king.” |
